Mending

It's been over a week now since I last posted here. On May 19, my mother-in-law Flora suffered a serious fall. In the ensuing hospitalization, an underlying heart condition was discovered and her condition--bad to begin with--deteriorated rapidly, and she died on Friday. She was a remarkable woman, and I will write more about her in time, but not yet. We have been preoccupied first with her accident and care, then with her death. Yesterday, in the aftermath of emotions and family, I sat down and began embroidering a new patch on my jeans, as we begin now our own mending, both visible and invisible.

Visible Mending

Daily Color: “Anyone who can handle a needle convincingly can make us see a thread which is not there.” –E.H. Gombrich

When I was in high school and college, I had the most gloriously patched jeans you've ever seen.

My sophisticated fashion sense was evident even then... Looks like I'm replacing the entire seat of those jeans.

Those jeans are long gone, but I still mend things. And if you're going to mend, why not make it a pretty embellishment, not just a utilitarian fix? My current jeans:

I always love the back side of embroidered fabric
